The TEALPOWER Story and its Legacy
In 2013, Alison Salinas was diagnosed with cervical cancer. She was 32. The lack of information about cervical cancer inspired Alison to begin her blog, Tealpower Canuck, which spread quickly through social media. She coined the term TEALPOWER as teal represents National Cervical Health Awareness Month in the US, which takes place in January.
In 2014, the first TEALPOWER team entered the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre’s annual cycling fundraiser, the Ride to Conquer Cancer. In 2015, Alison was asked to be the guest speaker and share her story to more than 4,000 riders. She spoke passionately about the treatment options the Ride helps to fund; what it was like to be cancer-free, only to have it return more aggressively; and her hope for the future. That day, Alison’s words and incredible spirit brought everyone in attendance to rally for the cause. In November 2015, Alison lost her epic battle with cancer, but her inspiring legacy lives on through her family and friends as they continue to raise awareness and funds for cervical cancer research. And as Alison’s message continues to spread, Team TEALPOWER grows each year.
TEALPOWER is now a year-round fundraising group with a goal for Canada to officially observe January as Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, and to ultimately, find a cure. TEALPOWER has been featured prominently in the Toronto Star, Toronto Sun, Etalk, CTV News, Hello Magazine, CP24, CityNews, and 680 News for their annual TEALPOWER Presents event, which attracted top talent including Wendy Crewson (Saving Hope, 24), Sandie Rinaldo (CTV News), Devon Soltendieck (Etalk), Annie Murphy (Schitt’s Creek), and many more. TEALPOWER co-founder Tyler Puley has opened the Toronto Stock Exchange and been honoured publicly by the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre as an honorary Ride Ambassador. Events like the Toronto Argonauts Football Club Alumni Cheer game, Yoga to Fight Cervical Cancer, SportsTalk Live, and Faceoff to Fight Cervical Cancer in support of TEALPOWER have help propel it to one of the most recognizable up-and-coming grassroots charitable organizations in the Greater Toronto Area.
